Abstract

The kidney is an organ with complex organogenesis susceptible to numerous misadventures in development and is exposed to a diverse array of insults of hematogenous and lower urinary tract origin. This Atlas of Medical Renal Pathology provides an overview of the development, macroscopic and microscopic features of the normal kidney. This is followed by a comprehensive survey of developmental and cystic kidney diseases, vascular diseases and tubulointerstitial diseases. An emphasis is placed on gross diagnostic findings with detailed histological correlates. In addition, the histological, immunofluorescent, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural features of the major glomerular diseases and renal transplantation pathology are presented. This compendium of non-neoplastic kidney diseases illustrates the vast majority diseases you are likely to encounter in surgical and autopsy pathology.

Abstract

Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) have been studied intensively in recent years and knowledge of the disease process and underlying molecular defects in MDS has expanded rapidly.  With the aging of populations and the concurrent increase in the diagnosis of MDS, these findings are of central clinical importance. New prognostic classification systems with refined prognostic significance have been developed, and molecular abnormalities are now finding their way into the process of clinical decision-making. The book has been  completely updated since the first edition and concisely summarizes the state of the art on all aspects of MDS, including clinical presentation, etiology, epidemiology, molecular biology, classification, and staging. The different chapters provide  guidance on diagnosis and differential diagnosis, as well as on treatment strategies, including the use of hematopoietic growth factors, biology-based treatment, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, and supportive care. MDS in children is also addressed in a separate chapter. This practically oriented book will be a valuable resource for a broad range of students and practitioners in the field.  .

Abstract

Recent years have witnessed numerous advances in stem cell research that have suggested novel strategies for the treatment of the chronic and regenerative diseases that pose a growing challenge to the provision of healthcare in the 21st century.  Nevertheless, there is little doubt that related disciplines have failed to keep pace with such developments, of which the immunology of transplant rejection is perhaps the most relevant to the nascent field of regenerative medicine.  Indeed, given that after decades of research into the mechanisms of organ allograft rejection, we remain wholly dependent on immune suppression to ensure acceptance of foreign tissues, we might legitimately ask whether there is any reason why tissues differentiated from stem cells might not suffer the same fate.  This volume seeks to address this issue by drawing on the principles of alloantigen recognition to assess the validity of early convictions that embryonic stem cell-derived tissues may prove invisible to the immune system of the host and the more recent belief that induced pluripotent stem cells, derived in a fully autologous manner, will circumvent the issue of immunogenicity.  Having debunked such assumptions and established the magnitude of the immunological barriers to be overcome, this book then draws on the expertise of internationally-recognised laboratories around the world to provide a critical assessment of the likely success of applying strategies such as stem cell banking, silencing of genes that confer immunogenicity, and the induction of transplantation tolerance to overcoming the immunological barriers in the future.  Indeed, it is only through reaching a consensus in the field that enduring solutions to such an intractable problem may ultimately emerge.

Abstract

Bronchiolitis Obliterans Syndrome in Lung Transplantation presents the most current and up-to-date evidence regarding the diagnosis and management of BOS.  In-depth chapters provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of the definition and changing perceptions of the nature of BOS as a clinical and pathologic entity, immune and non-immune mechanisms that have been identified as risk factors for the development of BOS, and interventions that may prove to be clinically useful for the prevention or treatment of BOS.  In addition to outlining the current state of knowledge, each chapter provides the reader with the most current and ongoing research in the field as well as identifies areas where future research is needed. Written by an international group of expert authors, Bronchiolitis Obliterans Syndrome in Lung Transplantation is an important new text, that is essential reading for pulmonologists, primary care practitioners, respiratory care practitioners and clinical researchers.

Abstract

This book describes how the Jerne-Burnet Forbidden Clone Theory and the Adams-Knight H Gene Theory, solved the pathogenesis and genetics of the autoimmune diseases showing how specific immunotherapy and prophylaxis can be developed. Furthermore, Ebringer's discovery of two microbial triggers of autoimmune diseases is described and the conclusion drawn that all autoimmune diseases have microbial triggers, so will be preventable by the finding of the triggers and vaccination against them.

Abstract

The book includes recommendations for COPD from published guidelines (eg, the GOLD, ATS, and NICE guidelines) and presents them in the context of relevant clinical treatment issues. This is an in-depth guide on the management of COPD, concentrating on the impact of COPD on a patient as well as how healthcare professionals can intervene and educate the patient at an early stage and thereby slow the onset of severe symptoms.

Abstract

Presenting contributions by 66 experts representing 13 countries, Volume 10 of the series Stem Cells and Cancer Stem Cells synthesizes current understanding of the causes, diagnosis, and therapy of major human diseases and debilitating tissue and organ injuries, using cell-based treatment. This volume presents contemporary research into generation, preservation, and uses of stem cells in fighting disease and tissue/organ injuries. The contents of the volume are organized into five sections. Mesenchymal Stem Cells section includes chapters on the use of stem cells in bone regeneration, studies and trials of stem cells in autoimmune diseases, and differences between adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells and bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells as regulators of immune response. Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells section offers chapters on drug discovery using human IPSC-based disease models, and on generation of antigen-specific  lymphocytes from IPSCs. Neural Cells and Neural Stem Cells section discusses use of bacterial artificial chromosomes in the genetic identification of stem cell-derived neural cell types, and use of moderate low temperature to preserve the stemness of neural stem cells. The section, Role of Stem Cells in Disease, discusses stem cell support in high-dose chemotherapy of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphomas; potential targets for drug resistant leukemic stem cells, bone marrow stem cell therapies for diabetes mellitus. This section also discusses the use of stem cells in treating thyroid, breast and bone cancers, hempophilia and Parkinson’s Disease. The section, Stem Cell Transplantation, includes chapters on reducing fungal infection in allogenic stem cell transplantation patients, use of Bulsufan/Fludarabine for conditioning in haematopoietic stem cell transplantation, and interleukin-7 receptor alpha polymorphisms in allogeneic stem cell transplantation. The editor, M.A. Hayat, is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Kean University, Union, New Jersey, USA.

Abstract

The knowledge of Th17 cells and other cell populations which secrete IL-17A, and/or IL-22 has expanded tremendously since the publication of the first edition “Th17 Cells: Role in Inflammation and Autoimmune Disease” in 2008. The present volume has been completely revised with the addition of new chapters on the IL-17 receptor family and signaling, and an in-depth review of IL-22 and innate lymphoid cells. The differentiation of naïve T cells into regulatory T cells and Th17 cells as well as the plasticity of Th17 cells is discussed. The role of IL-22 in cutaneous inflammation including psoriasis has been reviewed. In addition, the volume contains critical updates on autoimmunity, organ transplantation, tumor immunology and genetic mouse models for mechanistic studies. Lastly, the latest clinical progress in neutralizing antibodies to IL-17A, IL-17RA not only confirms the therapeutic promise foreseen in 2008, but also improves our knowledge of the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. In summary, this is a timely update and important review of the clinical and experimental aspects of IL-17, IL-22 and their producing cells.
